Snow snow snow -- it's a perfect surface for so many sports. There are so many activities that are fun in the winter that it's almost impossible to mention them all. We'll mention our favourites, and we invite our readers to contribute theirs!

Telemark

Snow kiting

Snowcats

Snowboarding is probably the one most popular sport for the kids and adults alike. Strap your feet, clad in comfortable boots, to a short and flexy board and go on down. Although a bit rough on the behind for the first few days, snowboarding is a great way to enjoy the snow, from powder to groomed conditions. Also read about alpine snowboarding (a.k.a. snowboard carving), a type of snowboarding with hard plastic boots and bindings, as seen at the 2006 Olympics in Torino.

The traditional way of getting down snowy slopes is skiing -- two planks instead of one, traditionally in stiff plastic boots. Although harder to learn than snowboarding, it offers a lot of advantages. Modern short skis are great for carving and they offer good stability and manouverability. There are a few varieties of skiing: alpine skiing, telemark, and nordic skiing (a.k.a. href="activities/nordic-skiing.html">cross-country skiing).

A fairly recent sport is snow kiting, where the rider (be it on skis or a snowboard) is pulled across the snow by a kite!

After the Colorado ski resorts close, there is still plenty of backcountry skiing or backcountry snowboarding to be done. Climb up using skins or snowshoes and enjoy the well-earned turns. If you don't want to walk up, you can take a ride in the snowcat.
