Carving at Copper with Dr. Scott

Contributed by tom. March 2006.

Activity: Alpine snowboarding

Location: Copper

I easily settled into the routine of getting up before 5 to get work started. We rode every day for a number of hours. Until Friday, every day we ran into Rob and Monique, who were coming to the hill around the same times. Rob is a strong rider and I very much enjoyed trying to follow his lines and moves.

On Thursday I had the biggest fall of the season -- I was riding down one of the funnel-shaped traverse trails (Skid Road?) when I overhooked my heel edge. I was riding right towards the trees, with the carve going maybe 4 inches past the tree trunk, and with my knees in between. I somehow threw my body up, ended up overloading the nose of the board and getting launched forward -- but past the tree! My upper body hit the snow as the board was still going strong, and I found myself upside down in the tree-less snow bank. My head was just off the piste, and my board was dug into the snow bank a few feet over my head.

On Friday Dr. Scott and Greg came with us, and Lisa spent some time taking video of us all. It was cool to see what we all looked like -- even though I've been my turns before, I felt as if every day this week I was becoming stronger, trying to apply lessons from Lowell and from Jeff.
