Skiing at Wolf Creek

Activity: Telemark skiing

Location: Wolf Creek

Well, just a few days ago I wrote about how I feel I live in paradise. How's this for an addition -- not two days after my hike I went skiing! That makes it a few hikes, afternoon of paddling, and skiing, all in 5 days :)

Kathy Mears and I drove down to meet Jody and Thai at Wolf Creek. They and their friend Marcel drove up from Albuquerque for the day... and it was great to see them again!

Not much to say here -- snow was outstanding, it was the best first-day-of-season I ever had. It felt like 5-6" of fresh powder fell on us that day, there were hardly any people at the ski area, and it was just a two hour drive from Salida. What else could one want?

It was Thai's first real day on tele skis, and he did very well. I was impressed :)

Most of the terrain we skied was covered by trees -- amazing that there was enough snow to ski it.

I pestered everyone to wait every so often, so that I could take some pictures. I used my new Optio 33WR that I got just a week ago, and it did fairly well. I used the movie mode almost exclusively, and so most of these shots are extracted frames.

As you can tell from our smiles, the trip wasn't worth the effort at all, the snow sucked, and we regretted not staying home to watch TV.

Around 3pm we said goodbyes, and Jody, Thai, and Marcel hurried back to Albuquerque. At 7pm, at REI, Thai had a slideshow presentation about his mountaineering adventures and paragliding of Mt. Kenya. Too bad Kathy and I missed it...
